I hope to have another 30-40 done by the end of the year to round out the first big volume. But how will it find its way through the printing press and into your hands? Questionable questions abound. I'm excited to announce that SF Supplementary File #2C has been completed and is now available for worldwide distribution. It's the final installment of SF Supplementary File #2, a 3-part zine devoted to Matsumoto Leiji's Queen Emeraldas.

SFSF#2C is bigger than the previous two parts: 52 pages, printed by risograph in 12 different colors at Retro Jam in Osaka, and hand-assembled by Ryan Cecil Smith. You can buy it for $6.

However, SFSF#2C is only one third of a zine. If you don't have the previous two parts, you should buy the complete set. You can read about the previous 2 issues here. Get all 3 together for $14.

The best thing about the Brooklyn Fest and the reason it's the only comic show worth going to in the USA is because awesome artists and friends come to the same spot and we all get to spend time together in real flesh life, everyone gets to hang out and smell each other, it's so much better than the internet!

The show is awesome and there is a very high percentage of great work at the show, even the lowest level of work present at the show is still "good." This is our third year showing at the BCGF and I can say without a doubt, "it's the best."
Anyway, the after party is always a total blast. Bill Kartalopoulos and Lizz Hickey do it up. Last year was all about the Pork Slap, this year: Brooklyn Brews, flavored vodka, and specialty Brinkman and Rege beers, whoooo! Lots of funny conversations, talkin about relationships, having a partner that can enjoy comics is essential! Everyone was powering down from the intensity of the show. Here's the inside scoop on the party.

Totally freaked out we went into Party Patrol mode and got down to some detective business,

long story short, Jesse McManus stole Conor's stuff!

HaHaHa. It was pretty amusing to find out that Jesse had the stuff, we all met up the following morning and had breakfast by the river, it was a beautiful hang-over repairing time.

It was really great to see our friends from Chicago. Anya was featured in the new Kramers Ergot! Movin on up! Seriously she deserves it! Andy, Leslie, and Max are all roommates and comic artists, they've been making some amazing work all holed up together. Max edited the anthology "Vacuum Horror" it features the entire Chicago crew. I would also recommend hunting down Andy's IDTN Group books, they are insane.

A Workshop by YES at the Contemporary Arts Center / Cincinnati, OH. Participants had their photo taken in the face-book set, the image was immediately uploaded to a shared folder, the photo was then color corrected, re-sized, saved for web on another computer, and then uploaded to Facebook by the user. All completed within a 3 minute time period. The final outcome was an online 'album' of every one's 'Face Book Profile Picture'.

Here's a comic that's about a year old that I never posted on the internet. It's 16 pages Riso-Printed and drawn on a 1 to 1 scale. No computers used. I just slapped the originals down on the copier bed and let 'er rip. Also, it was drawn all in pencil. Debuted at BCGF last year.
It is a revenge story about a teacher and contains "Mature Content."

Witch Hat canceled the Providence and Worcester shows, so i thought i'd do a little hurricane blogging about my travels in Toronto, "the wholesome city."

after the show, ice cream sandwich stupor, Jesjit Gill on the far left is the organizer of Zine Dream, he has an amazing print studio, he is a printing maniac! he is responsible for the Free Drawings newspaper and "pay what you can tye-dye shirts", LOL! His books are impeccable, find them if you can! I stayed with Patrick Kyle and Ginette (both on the far right) two of the three parts that make up Wowee Zonk. The Man Michael Deforge is poking in between them. Word on the street is new Wowee Zonk and new Lose are in line for TCAF! O shit was that top secret. A swell and talented crew, swelling with talent. Toronto is really potent with hot comics talent.

Last Saturday I boarded a subterranean elevator, crawled through an undersea tunnel, and emerged into the afternoon light at FLOAT, the live music space in Nishikujo hosting this year's Osaka Zine Fair.

Mika and Anna did a great job organizing the show. It was exciting to see so many people in this "scene" all at one place (I mean, I had never been to something like this before in Osaka). There were several workshops, including a "Lynda Barry" workshop (no, she was not present) and a kids' activity called "Walking With Bear." Homemade snacks were on sale in the front. It was nice to relax by the river adjacent to the building. Beautiful day, too.

There were a lot of people with different kinds of work. Not so many comics. A lot of nice Riso printing. I found out about a popular Risograph print shop in the area called Retro Jam Printing, that specializes in zines, flyers, and posters! Also, can you believe: there was another American guy who went to MICA at the same time as me! I used to see this guy around the Brown Center all the time. Small world, right? Sam is also currently in the JET program, in Nara.

I debuted SF Supplementary File #1, but didn't make a lot of sales until Sayaka showed up in the end & started chatting up the passersby. We went home and spent the money on pizza and read zines on the kitchen floor:

The comics community has been abuzz in recent weeks following the release of SF #1, CCC's new adventure series about a boy caught up in the galactic war between the Space Pirates who killed his parents, and the team of Scientist Fighters who invite him to join the Space Fleet.

SF is about a little boy named Hupa Dupa whose house gets blown up by space pirates, so he's recruited into the Space Fleet Scientific Foundation Special Forces to fight them. This is a new, continuing series inspired by Matsumoto Leiji's celebrated sci-fi manga Queen Millenia.

The book is 6 5/8" x 9", 36 pages, RISO printed and hand-manufactured, $6.

I did a new comic that appears on the viceland.com website. It is the 3rd chapter of Hatred and will be the first chapter in vol. 667 (it set's up a lot of the stuff that will happen in that issue, so there isn't much story, it's more of an introduction, but it's not confusing to read if you don' know the story.)

Hey whussup everyone. I'm still waiting on my official New Year's vacation here, but there's no classes to teach anymore so I got a lot of folding and stapling done at my desk in the staffroom. And now, all 250 books (plus extras) are finished!

So I'm proud of this book and I think you should read it, but don't take my word for it, look at these nice words from others:

The book's primary delight, perhaps even the reason Smith is pursuing an adaptation of this specific comic, can be found in the measured, deliberate, delicious pacing. Two Eyes Of The Beautiful could be about a subject matter 10,000 times less lurid and I'd still enjoy the way in which scenes slowly unfold, providing the suggestion of 1950s women-at-the-mercy-of-their-times films and making an assertion that evil acts arise out of the pattern and shape of everyday existence.

TWELVE GEMS Revealed

Greetings. I have been working since March on a new long-form graphic novel project called TWELVE GEMS. It's a comedic sci-fi space epic starring three heroic characters enlisted to travel the galaxy in search of twelve magical gems. Their benefactor - an eccentric and reclusive scientist named Dr. Z - pays them a hefty sum at the outset to cover the expenses of the endeavor. He doesn't actually know what the twelve gems do once obtained, but myths, theories, and rumors abound throughout the galaxy. The three heroes - with some reluctance - choose to undertake the mysterious task and regard it as a sort of paid vacation and an escape from their shady pasts.

The when, where, and how of this project remain unknown. For now, enjoy these preview pages. (They are sequential but not necessarily adjacent to eachother - much is omitted).

Here's Osamu Tezuka and Leiji Matsumoto drawing the same thing in different ways. One is clearly better! The worse one gets repeated in the exact same way 3 times in the book. In a way that creates a funny rhythm, which is good in its own way... but man, just look at the good one, wow!
...

PS So I picked up some Matsumoto manga, and generally don't like the drawings at all (I would call them: "ugly" and "bad"). I think his style changed a lot over time, but this particular book (Queen Emeraldas, 1978) does not feature stellar draftsmanship. Anyway lots of good things to say about Matsumoto...
